History of the University Unit

I yearned for the time I could buy a crumpled gaberdine raincoat (the student uniform)

- Janet Frame, An Angel at my Table

The University of Otago, as New Zealand's oldest university, is rich in history both in terms of academic developments and student life. The History of the University Unit exists to:

  • encourage research on all aspects of the History of the University of Otago.
  • work towards the 150th celebrations.
  • act as a clearing house for those engaged in writing up aspects of the University's history.
  • provide an electronic archive for accounts of University life and study.
  • facilitate publications on aspects of the University's history.

You are welcome to explore and contribute to this site, since the University's history springs from its people.

Culture of Change: Beginnings at the University of Otago, the new publication produced by ENGL 404 students, exploring the history of the University of Otago, is available from the Department of English.
